Stranded robot

So one of the sketch topics at work was a wandering robot astronaut, I thought it'd be neat if he was stuck in Hawaii and had to solve crimes and shit Magnum style. Pre-Nextwave Machine Man with a hawaiian shirt horribly concealing his robot body. Wanted to add a lei but couldn't think of something that worked w/the rest of the color style. Def going to continue messing with this one.

And here we go...

Whelp, gotta start somewhere.

So earlier tonight on twitter I saw this linked. It's a pretty great read for any artist, and for me in particular since to be honest I've been in a bit of a rut for awhile. It's part work, part trying to have a social life, parts 'I do more 3d now' all sorts of excuses but quite simply I just don't draw enough. I'll take my sketchpad and hit up the local coffee shop and sit around for an hour putzing about doing some halfassed doodles but ultimately I'll have shit after a couple hours wasted.

It sucks because I HATE being stuck on what to do, and honestly for awhile I've had a severe case of creativity block. Now I've been busy with work, which is great and all but when I get home and want to actually do something useful...nada. Spend a couple hours on youtube or SA and have shit and oh god it's 3 in the morning. Now, I've been working on a couple 3d models but it's different. Those are more 'long term' sorts of things which I don't mind doing of course but it's different than being able to create a comparatively quick sketch on paper/photoshop whatever.

And I know I can draw. I LOVE to draw, for fuck's sake that's what kept me awake during engineering classes, drawing robot penis-monsters for the gang to laugh at during labs. And it's frustrating since I'm surrounded by amazingly creative people and it makes me feel like a total chump.

Enough with the sob story shit. One of the things that link I mentioned listed was pick something you're not particularly good at and practice it. He even mentions motorcycles, which I love the look of but you'll probably never catch me on one (sorry, Colby). Lots of 3d perspective, mechanical details, aesthetic curves and all sorts of goodies to practice drawing skills on. I love them but I'm not the best at them, especially considering I'm a bit rusty.

So, here we are. I'm making a diary. Every day I'm going to draw me a cycle. Might not be the whole thing, maybe a detail sketch of the engine, or the handles, or something. Different styles, makes, types of bikes. WW2 shit that Steve Mcqueen jumped or crazy concept creations. Akira will probably show up. Maybe I'll talk about something else too, who the hell knows!
